After a year off, I’m dusting off the old blog to cover the
2016 fantasy season in my league, A
Football Life.
Since the last time I covered the league, we’ve had quite a
few changes. Saswat Misra is no longer in the league and we have added Andrew
Perez’s brother, Adam, to our ranks. Our league still allows one keeper each
year, but we draft them by round now rather than the keeper being your first
round selection as ESPN does by default. Instead of four divisions of three
teams, with only division winners going to the postseason, we have three
divisions of four teams with divisions winners plus a wild card making the
playoffs. A big change for this season is the addition of a second starting RB
spot in the lineup, bringing our total starter count to nine rather than the
eight it had been during the first three years of our league.
Considering that last change, it should come as no surprise
that the AFL saw new records for average points in a single week. The previous
record for the average score by a winning team was 128.4 points, set in Week 1
of the 2013 season, the first week of the league’s history. This week the
average score by winning teams was 134.1 points. The previous record for
average score by losing teams was 94.6 points. This week, that average was
108.4 points. The overall point total by all 12 teams was, on average, 10 more
points than the previous record! It will be interesting to see, at the end of
the season, what the total point difference is from previous years.
Four teams, including one losing team, scored in the top 40
all-time for single-week point totals. Brandon Saunders and Eric Meyer scored
the second and third most single-week points, respectively. Nolan Soter,
despite losing his matchup, finished with the 28th most single-game points in
league history.
Because scoring settings have not changed much, outside of
adding a tenth of a point per reception to make it a full half-point PPR
league, only two players moved into the top 20 in single-game performances at
their positions. Andrew Luck scored the 8th most points at the QB position in
league history with 37.3 points and DeAngelo Williams scored the 11th most RB
points with 34.7 points.
The biggest underdog in Week 1 was Evan Ash. Adam Perez was
projected to beat Ash by 7.6 points but lost by 26 points. The smallest line of
the week was just 2.2 points, by which Andrew Perez was projected to beat
two-time league champ Danny Hatcher. Perez won by 18.4 points.
Eric Meyer started five position players who scored among
the top five at their respective positions in Week 1, including two wide
receivers. Brandon Saunders, the week’s top scorer, started four such players,
one at each position.
In the year’s first game of the week, William Battle
defeated Cory Puffett, the defending league champion, by exactly one point in a
grudge match of last year’s title game. They were the third and second lowest
scoring teams this week, respectively.
