Super Bowl Sunday
Countdown: 2 Days
Sunday marks San Francisco’s sixth Super Bowl appearance.
They say each decade of the Super Bowl era belongs to a different team, and the
80’s were San Francisco’s decade.
Bill Walsh, one of the greatest head coaches in NFL history,
took San Francisco to Super Bowl victories in 1981, 1984 and 1988, his last
season coaching San Francisco. It certainly helped having Joe Montana as his
quarterback in all three.
The 1988 Super Bowl was the first with Jerry Rice but he
stuck around for the other two, with a new head coach. George Seifert arrived
and led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in his first season. It was the only time
the 49ers won back-to-back Super Bowls and they had two different coaches for
them.
George Seifert isn’t a household name across the country
like Bill Walsh’s is, but Seifert never won fewer than 10 games in a season
during his 8-year coaching tenure in San Francisco, and he took the 49ers to
their fifth Super Bowl appearance in 1994, with Steve Young as their
quarterback.
Joe Montana, in his four Super Bowl wins, earned the MVP
award three times, more than any other player in Super Bowl history. Four
players are tied for the Super Bowl record with 18 points in a single game.
Three of them played for San Francisco and one of them, Jerry Rice, achieved
the feat twice.
Not only is Sunday the 49ers’ sixth appearance in the Super
Bowl, a win would keep them perfect. Bill Wash led San Francisco to victory in
all three of his appearances and George Seifert won in both of his.
Tomorrow I will preview Super Bowl XLVII and my official
prediction will come on Sunday by noon. Stay updated on new blog posts as they
